Discourse Report

First Discourse Report

The first Discourse Report provides insight into the nature of, and methodological approaches to, antisemitic hate speech in selected discourse spaces. After presenting the research design of the pilot project Decoding Antisemitism, the report focuses on the qualitative analyses conducted on the comments sections of German and British mainstream media and their profiles on Facebook. Particular attention was paid to the Facebook threads responding to three discourse triggers: debates about George Soros (first half of 2020), the publication of the EHRC report on antisemitism in the Labour party (October 2020) and the expulsion of its former leader Jeremy Corbyn, and debates around the Covid-19 pandemic (autumn 2020). The report also presents the next steps of the project, which will focus on quantitative analyses and on the use of coded data for automated hate speech detection.
